This reward system is just what you need if you’re looking for an easy and flexible way to get started with reward systems in your home or institution. In the package you get:
Here’s how to do it:
Remember to agree on how to use the reward system and agree on the number and type of tasks per day. When using the reward system with a child with autism, it is very important to have clear and understandable rules, which means having criteria for when a task is completed. Last but not least, you need to agree on what happens if tasks aren’t completed and what rewards you’ll get for a job well done.
It’s important to create a positive experience with the reward system, rather than a negative one. A negative experience will be if the tasks are too difficult or too many, creating a sense of defeat. There should never be a stick for not completing tasks, but be aware that some children experience the lack of rewards as punishment. That’s why it’s extremely important to align expectations and assign tasks based on the child’s ability and desire to participate. For some children, it’s beneficial to start with very few and very simple tasks that don’t take much time. This helps them get used to performing tasks, which can then be expanded as they go along.
One idea for how rewards can work is that you have to collect x number of stars and/or medals to get a small gift, computer time or similar. Another way to do it for older children could be to calculate pocket money based on how many stars and medals you have received during the week. As a rule, there shouldn’t be too much time between task completion and reward. Some autistic people will also need rewards immediately after the task is completed. It could be that they get a piece of chocolate or playing time.
