This set of 4 small hourglasses filled with liquid and colored gel is a must-have for getting started with sensory stimulation. The dripping gel creates fun bubbles in the liquid and captures children’s attention. You can often find that children spend a lot of time looking at the dripping gel – and turning the hourglass upside down when all the gel is at the bottom. In the case of children with autism, they will often line up all 4 hourglasses and try to synchronize them or observe them for a long time – either as a main activity or as something that runs in the background.

The reason why hourglasses are so breathtaking is that they stimulate the nervous system through many impressions: color, dripping and last but not least, watching how and when the hourglass runs out. The primary purpose of the hourglass is to provide the extra sensory input that children need for development or calmness (sensory integration).
